Rising nine-year-old sprinter Green Birdie, two runs back into their Aussie racing career after a six year stint in Hong Kong, has opened at the top of the 2012 Bletchingly Stakes odds for this Saturday’s feature race at Caulfield.
Now prepared locally by Tony Vasil the Catbird gelding had their first run back in Australia on July 14 when seventh to Platelet in the Listed Sir John Monash Stakes (1100m).
There was plenty to forgive that run including their late exit from barrier 15 (of 15), the traffic jam they encountered and the unsuitably Heavy (9) course.
As such Green Birdie is well liked by his trainer, the punters and the bookies alike to win their second run back down under in the $125,000 Group 3 Bletchingly Stakes (1200m) this weekend.
Drawn far more favourably in barrier two with Damien Oliver retaining the ride the 2011 Group 1 Krisflyer International Sprint winner in Singapore is the current $4.40 favourite through bookmaker.com.au in their Bletchingly Stakes markets.
There are just two other single-figure chances in the 2012 Bletchingly Stakes odds with:
- #7 Ready To Rip ($5) – David Bourne’s three-year-old from Seymour is progressing through the ranks well, won over 1100m here three back beating Platelet before running second in the Listed AR Creswick Stakes at Caulfield and then third to Platelet in the Monash
While this top three are dominating the early betting on the Bletchingly there are a number of longer priced hopefuls that have genuine claims to score an upset on Saturday.
Seven other gallopers are under $20 in the betting including:
- #3 Eagle Falls ($10) – Former Group 1 winner (2011 Oakleigh Plate) at this track but David Hayes’ Hussonet six-year-old has only won one of their 11 starts since, that was first-up at Caulfield in the Group 3 Rubiton Stakes in February and they are first-up at the same track again on Saturday having last raced on Sydney Cup Day in April
- #13 Royal Bender ($12) – Darren Weir-trained mare has been racing super consistently in the winter sprints this prep, comes off two second place finishes in black types including a nose away from Platelet in the Monash
- #2 Heart Of Dreams ($13) – Mick Price’s resuming weight-for-age champ has been plagued by injury over the past 10 months but is reportedly back on track and ready to return to the winners stall, whether that’s first-up here or later in the spring remains to be seen but has the class factor
