Aiming to secure a third consecutive victory ahead of a likely step up in class through the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival, trainer Robbie Laing has confirmed Lord Of The Sky in the final field for the Bletchingly Stakes.

Securing an impressive record of five race wins and one minor place from just eight competitive starts, Lord Of The Sky has returned to racing in typically scintillating form this season; unlucky to finish second in the Auckland Racing Club Handicap (1000m) first-up before winning both the Listen Learn Speak Handicap (1000m) and Group 3 Sir John Monash Stakes (1100m) with ease most recently.

Allocated the ideal barrier 5, Laing is understandably confident of another successful run at Caulfield for the Danerich colt, particularly with jockey Dwayne Dunn confirmed for retain the ride.

Also included in the final field for the 2014 Bletchingly Stakes is talented South Australian raider Nearest To Pin.

Claiming eight wins and as many minor places from his 23 competitive starts, Nearest To Pin quickly built to the task at hand over his current preparation; finishing third in the Listed Matrice Stakes (1200m) first-up on March 10th and continuing to find an extra gear on his way to a shock victory in the Listed All Victorian Sprint Final (1200m) last time out on July 12th.

Allocated the ideal barrier 2, co-trainer Andrew Gluyas is confident his runner offers the best chance of beating clear race favourite Lord Of The Sky in the 2014 Bletchingly Stakes, who will be partnered by jockey Nicholas Hall for the second time.

Having taken her place in three Group 1 feature races during her current preparation, Shawn Mathrick-trained mare Gig is arguably a great dark horse chance of winning the 2014 Bletchingly Stakes, and is likely to receive the run of the race from barrier 6; one outside likely pace-setter Lord Of The Sky.

Claiming four wins and 14 minor places from 32 competitive starts, Gig began her current preparation with a hard-fought fifth in the Sportingbet Best Tote Plus Handicap (1200m) on November 23rd and has since competed in 14 events.

Running on to finish sixth in the Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m) on March 21st, the Commands mare finished second to Sistine Demon in the Group 3 Victoria Handicap (1400m) on April 19th before again sprinter well to finish sixth in the Group 1 Robert Sangster Classic (1200m) just one week later.

Having since finished mid-pack in the Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) most notably, Mathrick is confident the step back in distance and class will go a long way towards Gig returning to the winner’s circle in the 2014 Bletchingly Stakes.
