2015 Bletchingly Stakes Won by Smokin’ Joey

July 27th, 2015

Talented gelding Smokin’ Joey has returned to competition from a brief freshen-up in the best way possible; producing an exceptional turn of foot in the final straight at Caulfield to take out the 2015 Group 3 Bletchingly Stakes (1200m) with complete ease.

Jumping from the gates well, up-and-coming hoop Chris Parnham elected to settle Smokin’ Joey off the pace of early leaders Lord Of The Sky and Rich Jack, who flew the barriers and set a noticeably fast pace over the back straight and around the bend.

Finding the final straight wide and with plenty to do, the talented son of Encosta De Lago quickly responded when Parnham asked for an extra effort; producing a monumental kick to charge clear of all rivals; finding the line more than two lengths ahead of ex-Perth runner Platinum Rocker; three-year-old Petrology boxing on for an impressive third.

Trainer Wez Hunter was thrilled his decision to skip a barrier trial and enter Smokin’ Joey in the 2015 Bletchingly Stakes fresh and revealed the rising eight-year-old will target races over a greater distance this time in.

“When the noms were so light I was happy to roll the dice,” Hunter said.

“It’s better than having a jump-out, that’s for sure.

“His owner’s very keen to try him at 2000. He’s a full brother to Our Smokin’ Joe, who got over 2500 and won a Queen Elizabeth (Stakes), so hopefully he can do the same.”

Parnham delivered a brilliant ride on Smokin’ Joey for success in the 2015 Bletchingly Stakes but revealed he thought he had set the gelding in motion a little too early.

“I probably hit the front a bit too soon, certainly earlier than I wanted to, but he just tracked into it so well,” the young hoop said.

“Obviously being a bit fresher today he was able to quicken a bit better, but he probably wasn’t at peak fitness today, so he’s done a great job.”

In taking out the 2015 Bletchingly Stakes, Smokin’ Joey has now posted an impressive career record of nine wins and eight minors through 53 competitive starts.
