2016 Bletchingly Stakes Return Confirmed for Mahuta

July 25th, 2016

Trainer Darren Weir has revealed talented three-year-old Mahuta will return to racing in Saturday’s 2016 Group 3 Bletchingly Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield Racecourse, with a view towards contesting the Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) third-up.

Purchased for only $35,000, Mahuta has been a standout performer through Weir through nine career starts; posting six wins and a minor for close to $1.7 million in prize money.

Pleased with the benefit taken by the son of Flying Spur in his time away from racing, Weir told AAP the horse will take plenty of benefit from his first-up run in the 2016 Bletchingly Stakes and is confident he’ll be primed for the Memsie Stakes in a little over four weeks.

“He’s still big and woolly and gross but he’s a powerful, big horse now,” Weir said.

“He’s had two jump-outs and the second one was good.

“He’ll run in the P B Lawrence Stakes at his next start after the Bletchingly and then into the Memsie third-up.

“That’s his go, 1400 metres at Caulfield up on the speed.

“Whether he’s good enough, I’m not sure, but he’s been a great horse for the connections.”

Debuting to racing for second in the Palandri Insurances Maiden Plate (1100m) in September last year, Mahuta progressed to fourth in the Two Tarts Catering 3.y.o Maiden (1200m) before posting a maiden race win in the Winning Edge Presentations Maiden (1450m) on October 8th.

Making a successful transition to black type company in the Listed Gothic Stakes (1400m) on Caulfield Cup Day, Mahuta repeated the dose in the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes (1600m) before delivering a strong field a near-two length defeat in the Group 2 Sandown Guineas (1600m) on November 14th.

Returning from a brief freshen-up for his most impressive victory to date in the Gold Coast Magic Millions 3yo Guineas (1400m) on January 9th, Mahuta continued his winning run of form through the Group 2 Autumn Stakes (1400m) on February 13th, but had clearly had enough by the time he placed fourteenth in the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) most recently on March 5th.

The 2016 Bletchingly Stakes field and barrier draw is due to be completed and released by midday, Wednesday.
