2016 Bletchingly Stakes Likely for The Cleaner

Trainer Peter Gelagotis is poised to accept a position in the 2016 Bletchingly Stakes field with veteran gelding The Cleaner, having previously underlined the PB Lawrence Stakes as his likely first point of call this time.

The Cleaner is yet to make a competitive appearance since transferring to the care of Gelagotis earlier this year, but has impressed the Moe trainer in work, and off the back of a resounding six length success in a Cranbourne barrier trial on July 18th.

Gelagotis told Racenet that he is thrilled with the forward condition of the Savoire Vivre gelding and is likely to saddle the horse in the Bletchingly Stakes first-up this weekend.

“We spoke to the owners and we want to have a look at this race and decide whether to run him later in the week,” Gelagotis said.

“If we’re happy and it profiles right for him, he’ll probably run.

“The main reason for the change is the way he’s going.

“We’re unfamiliar with his previous campaigns but the reports coming back to us from his track riders have been very positive.

“We’re very mindful of the weather but the trials on Monday, we’re not 100 percent sure whether they are going to be (on) synthetic or grass.

“The horse needs a good hit-out before the Lawrence Stakes.”

The Cleaner has posted nineteen wins and a further sixteen minors through his fifty-four career starts, since debut for the Longford-based Mick Burles in 2011.

Claiming cult hero status during a standout 2014 Spring Carnival campaign, The Cleaner returned to racing last spring for a close second behind now stable mate Mourinho, before returning to winning form in the Group 2 Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m).

Progressing to a brave third in the Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) before running seventh in the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m).

The Cleaner has not been seen at the races since failing to make anything of an impression when seventh in the Listed Conquering WFA (1400m) in Tasmania on December 9th.
